On Saturday Dec.16, members of communities all over the United States will gather to honor veterans during the holiday season as part of the annual Wreaths Across America Day. Locally, the day will be observed at the Calvary Cemetery in Hollister.
The San Benito County Chamber of Commerce has volunteered to conduct the ceremony this year at the Calvary Cemetery on Saturday Dec. 16, 9:00 a.m. Seven ceremonial wreaths will be placed to remember all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines who served, honor their sacrifices, and teach our younger generations about the high cost of our freedoms.
Specially designated wreaths for the Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, and POW/MIA will be placed on memorials during a ceremony that will be coordinated simultaneously at over 1,000 participating locations all across the Country.
Currently over 200 wreaths are slated for delivery to Calvary Cemetery but sponsorships are still needed up until Nov. 27. Sponsorships received after that date will be applied to 2018 events.
In 2016, it is projected that over a million wreaths were placed nationwide, by over 600,000 volunteers as part of the Wreaths Across America mission to remember, honor, and teach.
Wreaths are $15. For more information on chamber activities: Juli Vieira at the San Benito County Chamber office at (831) 637-5315 or www.sanbenitoccountychamber.com.
