Today Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital received the Bankruptcy Court’s ruling that the hospital did not satisfy one of the statutory requirements to remain in Chapter 9 Bankruptcy.

The ruling acknowledged that “the District has faced an enormous financial challenge in the past several years” and that “the Board of Directors, officers, and staff responded to that challenge with innovative solutions and a sense of resilience.”

“The court’s conclusion that the District is not insolvent should be seen as a reflection of the District’s concerted effort to ensure that its hospital can continue to serve the San Benito County community in the future,” the statement said.

Hazel Hawkins Hospital wrote, “Hospital administrators are working closely with legal and financial advisors to analyze the procedural and financial impacts of the ruling.   This ruling is not a judgement on the hospital’s current solvency, and we are not out of the woods on our financial crisis.   The hospital’s primary goal continues to be keeping its doors open to provide high-quality care for the residents of San Benito County.”
