On Tuesday, June 2 the Junior Giants had their “first pitch” meeting at Marguerite Maze Middle School, a ceremonial kickoff for the new youth baseball league.
Players, coaches, commissioners, San Benito County Police Activities League Vice President — and Hollister Police Chief — David Westrick, and President Mike Sanchez were all in attendance at the informational meeting. They introduced the main concepts of the program, which included educational factors such as a reading log for the players, nutritional choices, an anti-bullying speech, and positive coaching.
All players in attendance received a prize, which is the first of many players can receive throughout the program for completing activities.
Sanchez explained how the Junior Giants is more than just a baseball program, because it includes character-building exercises at each practice. The ‘”four bases of characteristics” included: confidence, teamwork, leadership, and integrity.
Erica Vallian gave a speech regarding nutritional choices for the players, which included a “soda-free summer,” during which players take the healthier route by avoiding sugary drinks such as soda, energy drinks and Gatorade; and to drink plain water or water flavored with fruits and vegetables instead.
The Junior Giants program also promotes summer reading. Susanne Damm spoke about a player’s reading card, which if they completely fill it up, they would have the opportunity to win a trip to a San Francisco Giants’ game. “The more you, read the better you get,” Damm explained.
Patricia Marquez spoke about bullying and the steps players can take to prevent it. At the end of her speech she had the players recite an anti-bullying pledge. I hope you take that to heart,” Marquez said.
Westrick said he hoped the program paves the way for more activtives similar to Junior Giants. “When it comes to our community kids, we should set no limits.” said Westrick
About 30 volunteers are still needed as coaches. If interested, contact the Junior Giants local number at (831) 636-4390.
“I appreciate the city council and city manager’s support of my request to start this program and thank you to everyone involved in our team to make this happen,” Westrick stated.
