Lacrosse is SBHS’s newest sport

The team will play in the Mission Trail Athletic League

San Benito High School will be having its first ever lacrosse team this year. The varsity coach will be Don Jones and the team will play in the Mission Trail Athletic League. Lacrosse is a team sport that uses a long-handled stick called a crosse or a lacrosse stick and a rubber ball. The head of a lacrosse stick is strung with loose mesh designed to catch and hold the lacrosse stick. Offensively, the object of the game is to score by shooting the ball into an opponent’s goal, using the stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball to do so.

Athletic Director Tod Thatcher said that the one of the reasons the school has not had a lacrosse team before was due to the issues of funding a new sport. Superintendent John Perales the superintendent said, “I feel it gives our student athletes another great opportunity to be involved in our athletics program and a positive outlet.”

There will be bothjunior varsity and arsity teams. Thatcher said,” we had 80 student-athletes at the pre-season meeting and players are currently signing up for the season that starts on February 2.”

Freshman Cameron Last, said,” it’s always interested me. Me and my friends would play outside when I was little. Once I knew lacrosse was coming to SBHS, I knew I wanted to try out.”
