April 18, 1936 – October 21, 2026
Adeline Elizabeth Chantler lived to 90 years of age and was a long time resident of San Juan Bautista and devout member of Mission San Juan Bautista.
She was born to Manuel and Emilia Perreira in Pahoa, Hawaii on April 18, 1936. In 1946, at the age of 10, Adeline relocated to California with her parents and 7 siblings – Ernest, Elias, Edward, Walter, Caroline, Gilbert & Lorraine – where they eventually settled on Riverside Road in Hollister.
Adeline graduated from San Benito High School in June 1954 and was married that same month to Arthur Anthony Goularte. They moved to San Juan Bautista in the early 1960s and had 6 children together – Gregory, Laura, Debra, Alan, Cathleen (Cathy) and Michael (Mike). Arthur died suddenly in March 1966.
In 1971 Adeline married David Chantler, from Gilroy, and they lived in San Juan Bautista until Dave’s death 19 years later, in 1990. Adeline remained in her home in SJB after Dave’s death, for a total of 60 years.
Adeline was a late convert to thrift store shopping which, once she discovered the benefits of bargain hunting, she enjoyed (probably too well) into her later years. She was an avid gardener and for many years could recite the Latin names of her plants. Over the years, she participated in sewing and quilting groups, as well as square dancing. After being widowed for the second time, she became an active member of Women in Touch, The Gardening Club, VFW Auxiliary, and other social clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Ernest, Elias, Edward & Walter Perreira; sister Lorraine Wheeler; and son, Gregory Goularte, who died in 2020 from leukemia. She is survived by her 5 children: Laura Goularte (Seattle), Debra Goularte, Alan Goularte, Cathy Ayers, and Mike Goularte (Kansas); and 6 grandchildren: Caitlin and Matthew Goularte (Greg); Jillian and Joseph Steinberg (Debra); Candace and Samantha Goularte (Mike). Other survivors include sister Caroline Robertson, brother Gilbert Perreira, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Celebration of Life will be planned at a later date.
