Carol Lausten was born in Hollister, CA, on September 15, 1946, to Ann and Ken Lausten at the Old Hazel Hawkins Hospital. She was a true California cowgirl. Raised in the country at Dry Lake Ranch, she mastered the art of living with skill, resilience, and independence. In her younger years, she loved sewing and cooking and entered items in the San Benito County Fair.
Carol was known for her natural beauty and kind spirit. She expressed her love through her amazing cooking, always sharing generously with family and friends. She never turned away a person or animal in need.
Carol graduated from Jefferson School in 1960 with one other graduate, John Barrett, who remained a lifelong friend. She graduated from Hollister High School in 1964 and enrolled at Gavilan College at the Hollister airport. Soon after she left college, she had her son Hudson, who was born while she was living in San Francisco. Carol returned to Hollister and gave birth to her daughter, Jessica. Carol remained in San Benito County until her death.
Carol had a magical way with animals. They seemed to find her when they needed help. Her greatest passion was horses. Carol participated in the San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo. One of her most memorable rides was in 2004 when she
participated in the cowhide race. She was active for many years, competing in gymkhana throughout California. She came home with
multiple buckles and tack from her winnings, often out-riding competitors half her age.
Carol with her sisters Nancy and Janie assisted with the Hollister Fiesta Rodeo for 13 years.
Carol was a practical, no-nonsense woman who met life head-on. She got things done without fuss, all while carrying a deep sense of
humor. Even in difficult moments, she found something to laugh about. Those of us who knew her believe she is laughing once again
with her beloved partner, Ira Rodney.
Carol is survived by her siblings, Ralph Lausten,(Robin) Janie Lausten,(Steve) Nancy Lausten,(Jim) and Helen Lausten; her children, Jessica Walker (Josh) and Hudson Tropf; her grandchildren, Torri, Wylie, and Finley Walker and Brandon Rodney; her stepchildren, Nicole, Chris, and Laurene Rodney; her nephews, Kenny (Kathy) and Tyler Lausten; her niece Carrie Hauskens,(Brad) Cora Beth Cardinalli (Alfredo); her numerous great-nieces and great-nephews, along with their children. Carol is also survived by her beloved sweetheart, Matthew Escover, and many dear friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Paine’s Restaurant on June 6th from 11:00 to 4:00 pm. All family and friends are warmly invited to attend.
