Life and Times of Gail Franco
Our beloved sister, Gail Mae Franco, was reunited with Nana and Papa in heaven on September 2, 2026. After an extended illness, she was admitted to O’Connor Hospital, where she received compassionate care until her passing at age 70. Gail was born on June 22, 1956, in Gilroy, California, to John and Audrey Franco. The second of three siblings, she moved with her family to Hollister shortly after her birth and lived there for the rest of her life.
Gail attended Sacred Heart School and went on to attend Hollister High School. She later enrolled in Chico State University and received her BA degree in Child Development. For many years she managed a small daycare at the ranch on Fairview Rd. and worked for the County Office of Education as well.
At a very young age, Gail became a prolific swimmer. She would dress up for the annual Begonia Festival on the river in Capitola each year. During her training years as a lifeguard, she would swim across Bass Lake daily. She later worked alongside her mom teaching swimming lessons at the ranch.
Flowers were Gail’s passion. She could easily transform a tiny cutting into a beautiful flowering plant. You would find the area around her living quarters crammed with potted herbs, shrubs, or colorful plants of all types. Her gifts to others would usually include a plant that bloomed under her care and nurturing.
She enjoyed the outdoors and loved the tranquility of the mountains. Gail might be found fishing along a small creek while camping, but received more pleasure just sitting on a rock to admire the nature around her.
Gail loved animals and found room in her heart to take in and care for many stray cats. She loved her dog Enza and while this dog is a large aggressive-looking pitbull, she was as docile as her master.
Our sister could be seen carrying a smile despite what might be happening in her life. A kind and gentle soul that tried to light up the life of others. Her overriding concern in later life was finding a special place to live for her and her son.
Gail suffered a debilitating stroke in 2024 and spent two years at Pacific Hills Manor in Morgan Hill. Yet, while there, you would observe her display that bubbly personality, saying hi to everyone while pushed alongside them in her wheelchair. Staff all knew “Tina” and would return that contagious smile. Tina, as she was affectionately called, always displayed a witty sense of humor right to the very end.
Our sister was preceded in death by our loving parents John and Audrey Franco. She is survived by her son John Joseph (JJ) and brothers Mark (Debbie) and Greg, nephew Joseph and niece Amber, and many cousins.
The family is so grateful for the compassionate care from the staff at Pacific Hills Manor.
They worked to include Gail in the daily activities at the facility. Her friends Laura Shields and Melody (Fredrick) Rodriguez always made time to visit her, and she looked forward to these get-togethers.
She will be missed by all that knew her.
