December 31, 1937 – July 28, 2025

Jose Luis Prieto, 87 years old, passed peacefully on Monday, July 28, 2025 in his Hollister, California home surrounded by his wife, Porfiria Prieto, children and grandchildren. Born in Guanajuato, Mexico to Enrique and Regina Prieto, Jose Luis grew up a shoe maker before starting a family in Hollister, California with his wife Porfiria whom he met in Valle de Santiago, and married at the age of twenty. 

An agricultural worker and a manufacturer in the 1950’s for multiple companies in town; Jose Luis built multiple relationships becoming a well known man often stopping to talk to his amigos everywhere he went. After his retirement, Jose Luis enjoyed family time, often dropping and picking up grandchildren from school and showcasing his home grown chiles to his children, grandchildren, and neighbors. A devoted catholic, he made sure to attend mass every Sunday, making sure to never miss. 

An incredibly outgoing person, Jose Luis made friends everywhere, spending hours talking in grocery stores and making people laugh. Despite his love for social events Jose Luis cherished a slow life, frequently passing time cruising around town in his white Toyota, people watching, and enjoying the sun in his garage while waiting for his amigos to arrive to play cards. 

He is survived by his wife, Porfiria Prieto and children- Robert Prieto, Martha Prieto, Guillermina Garcia and spouse Norberto Garcia, Maria Prieto, Gloria Gutierrez and spouse Ruben Gutierrez, Jose Luis Prieto Jr. and spouse Ofelia Prieto. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, 7 siblings, and caregiver.  

Known for his whistling, love for music and red wine, attending his grandchildren’s sports events, and family BBQ’s; Jose Luis will always be remembered for his infectious charisma and enthusiasm for life.
