It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved sister, aunt and friend, Laramie Maria Treviño at the age of 73, in Capitola, California. Laramie was born on June 25, 1953, in Mercedes, Texas to Alta Grace Treviño and Pedro Hernandez.
After graduating from San Benito High School, she attended the University of Redlands where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. While she was enrolled there Laramie had the wonderful opportunity to study abroad at the University of Oxford in England. She completed her educational studies at the University of Arizona (Go Wildcats!) in Tucson, where she earned a Master of Arts in journalism.
She became a newspaper reporter, freelance writer and a University of California certified Master Gardener with the Santa Clara County Chapter. She was a proud member of many organizations, including the California Chicano News Media Association and National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
She worked in the newsrooms of several papers and freelanced for others, including The Denver Post, Arizona Daily Star, El Independiente, Milpitas Post, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News, Los Angeles Times, Salinas Californian, Register-Pajaronian in Watsonville, Latina Magazine and Hispanic Business Magazine. Later in her career she worked as a writer and editor for The Tech Museum in San Jose and a health research group at Standford University.
Throughout her life Laramie was a free spirit. She enjoyed traveling and meeting prominent officials and celebrities, including former U.S. President George Bush, the actors Eddie James Olmos and Tom Selleck, professional athletes, and many more. To celebrate her 50th birthday she swam in the Pacific Ocean near San Franciso. Her passion and love of gardening and planting vegetables inspired her friends and audiences who attended her seminars.
She is preceded in death by her parents Grace Treviño and Pedro Herandez. She is survived by her siblings Jose “Lupe” Barrientos of Zephyr Cove, Nevada; Michael Barrientos of Patterson, California; Caroline Barrientos (Timothy Gellings) and Jackson of Hollister, California; Elizabeth Kathy Garcia (Norman) of Salinas, California; nieces, Elisha Ramos (Jose), LaShea Jones (Andrew), Dino & Daisy Mae, Allysen Garcia, Ashley Garcia; nephew Ty Dailey and great nephews and nieces.
The family appreciates all the generosity, kindness, support and love expressed by Laramie’s friends and colleagues. She will be deeply missed and will forever live in our hearts as she has touched so many lives. She will be remembered for her kindness and just being her eccentric self.
Please join us for a Celebration of Life, ceremony beginning at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Martial Cottle Park (Ethel Lester Section), 5283 Snell Avenue San Jose, California. Guests are encouraged to wear colored attire.
