Oct 18, 1943-June 3, 2026
Mark Alred Tognazzini passed away peacefully on June 3rd, 2026. Mark was born in Hollister, California to Alfred and Mary Jane Tognazzini, who preceded him in death, along with sisters, Leilani Valiant and Dorthy Bengtson. His younger brothers Eric and Kirk also preceded him in death.
Mark’s wife Bonnie Tognazzini passed away just nine days before him on May 25th 2026.
Mark and his first wife Kathleen had two children Matthew and Christopher.
He is also survived by nephews Todd and Eric Bengtson, brother in law Gary Bengtson and grandchildren Hunter and Payton.
Mark graduated from Hollister High in 1961. While in high school Mark got a part time job with the Department of Agriculture in San Benito county. This was the beginning of a 44 year career with the Department. He rose through the ranks to become the Agricultural Commissioner and sealer of weights and measures. He retired from that role in 2004.
Mark enjoyed many pursuits outside of work. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He grafted 1000’s of trees throughout San Benito County. He enjoyed gardening, raising vegetables and winemaking. Doing much of the work himself he greatly expanded and added artistic elements to his home which he dubbed “Chalet Tognazzini.”
He was also skilled in many facets of artistry. His leatherwork included making belts and handbags. He created the first official Haybaler mascot for Hollister High as a high school student. He was adept at woodworking and etching metal and glass.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to staff of Loma Clara memory care. They were so caring and loving towards Mark during the 3 1⁄2 years he lived there.
A celebration of life will be held at Chalet Tognazzini later this summer. We will post the date and time when we decide on the date.
