Nearly 60 scouts from three Hollister packs and a San Juan Bautista pack participated alongside adults in the Second Annual Pinewood Derby on Oct. 25 at the Veterans Memorial Building in Hollister.

Hosted by the Silicon Valley Monterey Bay Boy Scouts Council, the event included both a Corporate competition featuring local businesses, which serves as a fundraiser for the local scouts organization, and a District championship for the scouts.

Pinewood Debby is a traditional Cub Scout activity that all starts with a pinewood block. Kids design the cars with their parents, carving and shaping them any way they want, then race them for 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place.

Director of Development Evgenia Mirfield said it was an open competition with categories for youth and adults, with no charge for participating.

Mirfield said the event was made possible by the support of Granite Rock, Damm Good Water, True Leaf Farms, Top Flavor Farms, Ocean Mist, Chalimura Antal, Napa Auto Parts, RDL Construction, and Shelton Insurance.

Wyatt Cline, a 10-year-old San Juan Bautista resident, said his mother and scout leader Kaitlyn Cline encouraged him to attend.

“I wanted to go,” he said, “because it sounded fun for us. I love watching them race. My favorite was Paige’s Lake’s car. It’s really cool.”

Mirfeld said she hoped the event would let more kids and more families in San Benito County know that scouting is alive and active.

“We would like everybody to join,” she said.

Derby winners included:

District finals, Pack 444’s Aliza Ramos, first place; Pack 444’s Angel Ramos, second place; and Pack 408’s Wyatt Webb, third place.

Corporate competition, Damm Good Water, first place; Shelton Insurance, second place; RDL Construction, third place.

There was also an Open category for anyone who wanted to enter the competition.
