The San Benito County Arts Council has partnered with El Teatro Campesino to bring back its popular show, “Popol Vuh: Heart of Heaven,” in August. This free, outdoor presentation tells the Mayan story of creation with large-scale puppetry, colorful costumes, stylized dance movement, and live music.

In preparation for these shows, El Teatro Campesino would like to invite interested members of the community to participate in free workshops focusing on mask/puppet making and physical movement. Local painter Jose Ortiz and a group of artists from Hijos del Sol will give instruction on paper mache and other techniques. Members of El Teatro will guide participants through simple physical movements that we use in theatrical presentations.

Participants are welcome and encouraged to attend any one or all of these sessions. Space is limited and RSVP is recommended.

Workshops are scheduled for July 12, 13, 19, and 20 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at El Teatro’s Playhouse in San Juan Bautista. For more information, click here.
