A $500 scholarship is being made available in memory of Martha Metzger, a lover of fine arts, an accomplished singer, songwriter and photographer.
The Martha Metzger Scholarship is for a student from one of the San Benito County high schools; Anzar, San Benito High or San Andreas.
All students in San Benito County will have an equal opportunity for this scholarship and they need at least a C grade average or above to apply.
The important requirement is that students have recommendations that support their talent and a plan to pursue it.
Interested students may get an application for this scholarship at their school office and must have it completed and returned to the school office by Friday, March 2. All high schools in the county have been provided the applications.
The Community Foundation for San Benito County has agreed to handle the transfer of the funds once that student has enrolled in a continuing program.
Seniors in San Benito schools who are going on to a post secondary school, (does not have to be a four-year college) vocational school or music academy, etc. are eligible.
Just out of high school, Metzger, who the scholarship honors sang and performed with her band, “Martha Hill and The In Sounds,” (using her maiden name). In 1968, she entertained thousands of troops in Vietnam and Thailand in the first USO tour to follow Bob Hope into the war zone. Metzger sang professionally with numerous bands, performing all over the western United States. She eventually settled in San Benito County and continued performing and enjoying music until her death in May 2016.
