Local San Benito County-based nonprofit news website BenitoLink will receive a $25,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation.

The MPF Grant Committee announced the approval of the BenitoLink grant Dec. 6, which is to provide work through the website for local young adults and increase the Latinx Voice in the community through news coverage.

“We want to encourage our youth through improved skills and work opportunities. We get the added benefit of hearing an additional and rarely heard voice of our community. We seek out stories from residents of all ages and neighborhoods large and small,” said Leslie David, BenitoLink executive director.

BenitoLink is a nonprofit, community-supported organization that primarily serves San Benito County residents. The news website is dedicated to coverage of local government and elected officials serving the county. BenitoLink’s goals are to serve all the residents of the county and provide an open platform for constructive, civic dialogue. The grant is designed for skill building and employment opportunity for San Benito youth, while welcoming new and various perspectives to news coverage.

“It is BenitoLink’s interest through this great opportunity provided by the Monterey Peninsula Foundation to expand the insight into the wide variety of cultural groups we have and to discover stories from new perspectives,” David said. “We hope to give more first jobs to the Latinx youth and young adults through this grant.”

”The MPF grant making strategy is to “strengthen the web of services, programs, and supports that contribute to healthy vibrant communities”. As the foundation website explains, “We fund organizations over the longer-term, however, we work to minimize dependence on annual support grants whenever appropriate and prudent.”

The Monterey Peninsula Foundation’s mission is “to enhance the quality of life in Monterey County and surrounding areas through the strategic disbursement of charitable funds generated by hosting the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the PURE Insurance Championship.” The Foundation says it aims to host “the most remarkable tournaments for players, spectators, sponsors, and volunteers, and to focus the philanthropy made possible by the tournaments to enhance the quality of life across Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito Counties.”

The MPF has several areas of interest for grants: Arts and Culture, Community and Environment, Education, Health and Human Services, and Youth.
