In a Fourth of July weekend tragedy, a San Leandro man died from injuries suffered in a motorcycle crash on San Felipe Road on July 5, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A CHP news release indicated the unidentified victim was involved in a solo crash that occurred at approximately 3:35 p.m. at the Bert Drive roundabout near the Amazon warehouse. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he died as a result of his injuries, according to the release.

The CHP release indicated it is unclear if drugs and alcohol were a contributing factor of the crash.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the motorist killed during this tragic event,” said CHP Hollister-Gilroy Area Commander Capt. Noel Coady. “This crash and its disastrous outcome were preventable and serve as a reminder to all motorcyclists to minimize their risks by wearing an approved helmet and protective gear, while riding in compliance with all traffic laws.”

CHP Officer Moises Moncayo said his agency would not be releasing further information at this time.

Thousands of bikers attended the return of the Hollister Independence Rally on July 4 following an eight-year hiatus. The two-day event took place in downtown Hollister.

Meanwhile, Hollister police are continuing their investigation into the July 5 drive-by shooting that left a 15-year old male with serious but non-fatal injuries that required him to be transported to a Bay Area trauma center hospital.

Hollister Police Chief Carlos Reynoso said the victim suffered facial injuries from the windshield glass of a nearby truck that was shattered by the gunfire.

Reynoso said there are no suspects as of July 8 but police are in search of a white sedan with tinted windows. He said the police do not have a license plate at this time.

“We are doing everything we can to identify and arrest the suspect who conducted this cowardly act,” he said.

Fire Department calls

It was also a busy Fourth of July weekend for Hollister firefighters, who responded to 45 calls ranging from fires to vehicle collisions.

Hollister Fire Chief Jonathan Goulding said his department was dispatched to 23 calls on July 4 and 22 calls the following two days.

Among those calls were the 27-acre Sabe Fire and the 18-acre Cowden Fire.

According to the Cal Fire tracker, the Sabe Fire began July 4 at 4:45 a.m. The fire was located near the intersection of Quien Sabe Road and Santa Ana Valley Road and was fully contained in about 12 hours.

The Cowden fire ignited on the 300 block of Cowden Road around 12:24 p.m. on July 4. It was contained about 10 hours later, according to the tracker.

The cause of both fires are under investigation.

Goulding said his department also responded to a smaller grass fire that appeared to be related to fireworks, a structure fire and six motor vehicle accidents.
