With registration now open, San Benito Stage Company will be hosting its first summer camp June 18 to June 22 at Sacred Heart Parish School. Anticipating 150-200 students to participate this summer, the camp will be organized into two different programs. The first, Theatre Camp, will allow students to pick a pathway to follow a personal interest such as musical theater. The second program, Master Class, allows campers who meet certain qualifications to participate in an advanced acting class. As found on San Benito Stage Company’s Theatre Camp brochure, “The mission of SBC Theatre Camp is to incorporate singing, dancing, and acting skills to help campers develop confidence, curiosity, and imagination.”
For students interested in focusing on a certain skill set, the SBSC Theatre Camp, has three pathways for students to pick from. The pathways include Theater Arts, Broadway Dance, and Musical Theater. All pathways will have support from directors who will be in charge of their assigned pathway and will design curriculum for the course. Directors will teach the curriculum to counselors who will work with their assigned groups to learn the material they will perform at Friday’s show. Derek Barnes, who is helping organize and run the camp, said that throughout the week students will meet with their directors to receive feedback and learn blocking.
For students who have had theater experience and want to further develop their skills, San Benito Stage Company has created the “Master Class” geared toward advanced acting. As found on the Master Class Brochure, “Master Class is open to any camper aged 10-14 (8th grade), that has been in at least 2 SBSC shows in the past 2 years. Master Class can accommodate up to 20 campers on a first come basis. We will be performing two One Act plays on Saturday June 23rd.” According to Barnes this class will be split into two groups with each group performing its own one act show at Saturday’s performance.
All students in the camp will work with both directors and counselors as they prepare for their end of the week performances. Campers will also have a 30 minute lunch break in the middle of the day with a special Ohana Ice Social on Thursday.
