This month the San Benito County Board of Supervisors appointed Gail Newel, MD, as the public health officer for San Benito County, assigned to the Health and Human Services Agency.

“Dr. Newel is an experienced physician who brings to San Benito County a record of integrity and wisdom coupled with a commitment to community and family," stated James Rydingsword, agency director.

“I am very interested in being visible and accessible to the residents of San Benito County," Newel said. "I plan to be an active participant in efforts to develop our environmental and public health capacities. This has become more important than ever as our community faces continuing public health issues, such as communicable disease, immunization and emergency preparedness. I also plan to promote health issues such as diabetes and heart disease and the burden of disease on our community with a specific focus on maternal, child and adolescent health.”

Dr. Newel says she is excited about joining the dedicated team in the Public Health Division and is looking forward to learning to know the communities of San Benito County.

A press release from the HHSA stated, "With her vast and exemplary medical and public health experience, San Benito County welcomes Dr. Newel to the Public Health Division of the Health and Human Services Agency and looks forward to transforming the health and well-being of our families and community."
