San Jose man died and three others were transported to hospitals after an early morning head-on collision on the 1700 block of Shore Road, east of Lake Road.

Serg. Bryan Penney with the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office said identified the victim as 40-year-old Luis Bolanos.

Office Moises Moncayou said two vehicles involved were a Honda Accord and a white GMC Sierra pick-up truck. He said Bolanos was driving the Accord.

He said Bolanos was driving west toward Hwy 25 about 5:45 a.m. when they attempted to pass another vehicle on the two-lane road and crashed head on with another vehicle.

Penney said CHP is investigating the crash and that at the moment neither alcohol or drugs are suspected to be involved.

He said witnesses reported Bolanos driving about 80 miles per hour while attempting to make the pass. The speed limit on Shore Road is 55 miles per hour.

Penney said it was unknown if the injuries suffered by the other three victims were serious or life-threatening.

Shore Road, which was repaved last year, has been a source of multiple fatal crashes in the last several years. In 2025, four county residents died as a result of two separate accidents.
