In recognition of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the San Benito County Board of Supervisors reaffirmed its commitment to honoring and supporting local veterans through a series of actions approved at its October 27, 2026, meeting, including participation in Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide initiative honoring military veterans and raising awareness of the resources available to support them and their families.
During the meeting, the Board received a presentation from the Veteran’s Services Officer highlighting current annual veteran data for San Benito County, outreach efforts, and services available to the local veteran community. The Board also adopted a resolution supporting Operation Green Light for Veterans, and approved Certificates of Recognition honoring American Legion Post 69 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 in acknowledgment of their dedicated service and contributions to the San Benito County community.
As part of the initiative, the Board directed County Building and Grounds Maintenance staff to illuminate designated County buildings green from November 4 through November 11, 2026, using projections, floodlights, or green filters as a visible demonstration of solidarity and appreciation for veterans.Â
Led by the National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers (NACVSO), Operation Green Light encourages counties nationwide to recognize the service and sacrifices of veterans while highlighting the challenges many face in transitioning from military to civilian life. Now in its sixth year, Operation Green Light continues to expand with 412 counties across 44 states participating in 2025. This year, organizers are inviting the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs to participate, with hopes of achieving larger numbers.
The San Benito County Board of Supervisors recognizes and emphasizes the importance of honoring veterans not only on Veterans Day but throughout the year. In support of this effort, the County encourages our residents, local businesses, and community organizations throughout the county, including the cities of Hollister and San Juan Bautista, to join the initiative by displaying a green light at their homes, storefronts, or places of business from November 4 through November 11.
A simple green light serves as a powerful symbol of appreciation, reminding veterans throughout San Benito County that their service is recognized, their sacrifices are valued, and their community stands behind them. Community members are also encouraged to share photos of their participation on social media using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight.
