On Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, I wrote an open letter to BenitoLink congratulating Roy Sims on his election. I ended the letter with the following thoughts; “Council’s decisions will have a lasting impact. Whether you run for public office or not it is important that we as the residents of Hollister remain aware and informed of what is happening in our neighborhoods, our community and our city. Not only is it our right, but it is our responsibility and duty to stay engaged. Step up, be engaged, volunteer, and get involved. It’s our city! Thanks again.”
Well, residents from District 4 recently stepped up in a big way! Nine, including myself, applied to be appointed to the District 4 Council seat when Mr. Sims resigned. One was appointed, eight left disappointed.
My personal thanks to all those who applied; Jacob Aguirre, Adolfo Gonzalez, David Huboi, Robert Marden, Marty Richman, Ashley Sand and William Woodall. Congratulations to Jim Gillio who was appointed. All are exceptional individuals.
I have no doubt that Districts 1, 2 and 3 also have exceptional people who live in those areas as well. I am looking forward to seeing who runs for office in the 2018 elections. I can’t wait to see who steps up next!
Running for an elected office may or may not be your thing. Even if you don’t want to be elected or appointed to the City Council or Board of Supervisors, we all can volunteer to make the city and county a better place.
Many opportunities await you. Two that I am familiar with are:
- County of San Benito, Office of Emergency Services, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and
- County of San Benito, Civil Grand Jury
I am sure there are many more opportunities that I am not aware of. If you know of some others, please speak up. Volunteers make our world a better place!
Sincerely,
Tim Burns
