Information provided by the Hollister Police Department.

The Hollister Police Department issued a March 19 press release noting the department has documented several reports of residents receiving phone calls advising them they have a warrant for their arrest and need to pay a fine.

According to the release, the callers request that the residents purchase gift cards or Google Play cards, or wire cash. Once purchased, the caller requests the PIN from the cards in order to “clear” the warrant.

The caller ID from the suspects has the Hollister Police Department phone number or the phone number for the Social Security Administration, the release said. Callers are scamming residents and are not calling from the Hollister Police Department or the Social Security Administration. The release notes that the Hollister Police Department would never call residents and demand money.

Police said if residents receive a call of this nature or if they have sent money and would like to report the fraud, please call the non-emergency phone number at (831) 636-4331.
