Information provided by Cal Fire San Benito-Monterey Unit.

Cal Fire plans to conduct a prescribed burn of 2,359 acres on private property in the Gablian Range east of Salinas in San Benito County on Tuesday, Oct. 23 and Wednesday, Oct. 24, according to a recent press release.

The purpose of the project is to reintroduce fire to the ecosystem, thereby reducing hazardous fire fuels by removing brush and down woody materials. This type of exercise also provides valuable hands-on training for fire personnel in fire suppression activities while working safely in a controlled environment, the press release said.

Smoke from the controlled burn will be visible from Hollister, Santa Clara Valley, Salinas Valley and San Benito County, according to the press release. Weather conditions will be monitored and the burn may be postponed if burning conditions are found to be unfavorable.  Cal Fire is in close consultation with the National Weather Service's Monterey office and the Monterey Bay Air Resources District to ensure that the burn takes place in appropriate weather conditions. The project could be postponed if conditions are not conducive to a safe burn.

The San Benito-Monterey Unit of Cal Fire will provide updates for this controlled burn via Facebook and Twitter the day of the burn:
