When Raymond Martinez turned a lifelong fascination with city and county planning decisions and projects into his blog, The San Benito Blueprint, he expected it to be read by only a handful of people. Instead, it has become the go-to source for nonpartisan information on current and upcoming building projects in the county.

“I take the agendas or minutes,” he said, “and I simplify them into something that people can understand. I have had over 33,000 unique visitors so far, and I think that the overwhelming response has shown that the community really wants this information.”

Martinez was prompted to create the site in January 2025 after seeing that online discussions of civic planning were often based on little to no factual information. His understanding of the core issues, he said, enabled him to cut through the haze and offer clarity where there might be confusion.

“I feel as though I have a responsibility to the community,” he said, “to make sure that not only am I keeping up the unbiased nature of the posts, but that I can highlight things that are current issues and give people a source of truth.”

The work is substantial, Martinez said, and describes it as “ultra time-consuming.”

“I have to read everything,” he said, “then research things I don’t understand. If you’re talking about a general plan document, it’s hundreds of pages long. You’ve got to sift through that and highlight the things that people are impacted by the most.”

Though he strives for impartiality, Martinez said he has occasionally been accused of being funded by contractors and developers. “Prove it,” he said.

“I work a regular job,” he said, “and it’s not even a nine-to-five. I don’t have the luxury of having money. I pay the $100 annual fee for my site, and I do all the work on my own time.”

According to Martinez, what makes the work worthwhile is that nonpartisan breakdowns and analyses have brought him regular readers on all sides of the growth issue, with some reaching out to him for more information to help them support their positions.

“The information I’m posting can be informative to everyone,” he said, “I say to the naysayers, if sharing what’s really going on is bad for you, then maybe you should take a look in the mirror and really see if what you are doing is beneficial for the people.”

Raymond Martinez is one of the community members being honored at the  BenitoLink Press-Tigious Awards on April 25 at 4:30 p.m. at Leal Vineyards and Winery.
