Public input sought on local garbage, recycling programs

Recology's franchise agreement expires in June 2018; public workshops scheduled for April 25 and 27

Community feedback is sought from residents and businesses regarding potential improvements to Recology's garbage and recycling collection programs in San Benito County.

The cities of Hollister and San Juan Bautista and the county work together through a regional agency to manage garbage and recycling collection programs to meet state laws such as AB 939, which requires cities and counties to recycle 50 percent of their waste. The regional agency manages a franchise agreement with Recology that expires on June 30, 2018.

The potential improvements to Recology’s services will a focus on meeting these goals:

  • Provide high quality programs and services at the best cost
  • Ensure programs/services meet state recycling laws and are up to industry standards
  • Ensure that rates are fair and equitable

Two public workshops are scheduled for the community to share its feedback and ideas on improving local recycling and garbage collection services. They will be held Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors Meeting Room, 481 Fourth St. in Hollister and Thursday, April 27 at 3 p.m. in the same location.

Locals are also asked to take a short, online survey at the following links:
