One of the hot topics in the press lately is the issue of mass deportation. Many people are afraid of what is going to happen with the new administration’s mass deportation policy–especially farmers.
I read an article that stated in California there were 420,000 farmworkers, and it estimated that up to 60% were undocumented. Should undocumented farmworkers be a top priority for deportation? In my opinion, the answer is simple. No! Because farmers throughout our country depend on farmworkers. They know that it is illegal to hire undocumented workers, but they cannot function without them.
What the incoming administration and congress need to do is help farmers by passing
legislation that helps undocumented farmworkers and their families attain legal status. Our country needs immigration reform, especially when dealing with highly needed farmworkers.
