Dear San Benito County Community Members and the Elected Leaders Who Represent Us,
We are in the midst of an escalating crisis that threatens the very foundation of our democracy. The recent actions of the Trump administration—including the firing of key military leaders, undermining of the judicial system, and subversion of laws passed by Congress—are direct attacks on the rule of law and constitutional governance. This is not speculation or political rhetoric; it is a reality unfolding before us. History has shown that ignoring these warning signs leads to irreversible consequences. Now is the time to act—delay and division are not options. We need a clear strategy, shared goals, and real results. While Trump’s administration is executing Project 2025 with lightning speed, we must organize, unite, and fight back with strategy and focus. Without collective action, our community will continue to suffer. We urge San Benito’s elected representatives to create a strategic plan that truly serves the people they represent. Below are a few concrete, high-impact actions voters and elected representatives can take right now. IMMEDIATE ACTIONS
- Contact Republican Members of Congress—If you have friends or family in Republican-held districts, encourage them to call their representatives and demand they uphold democracy and reject unlawful executive overreach. If you live in a Republican district, call your representative directly and hold them accountable for their stance on the administration’s actions.
- Write Letters to Editors in Republican Districts—Write letters to local newspapers in Republican-held districts, urging elected leaders to protect the Constitution. Highlight the impact of recent actions on all Americans, regardless of party, and demand accountability.
- Support Special Elections for Congressional Seats—Donate or volunteer to help elect candidates who will stand against authoritarianism. Here are the top three priority races:
- Florida’s 1st Congressional District (April 1, 2025): Support Gay Valimont to flip the seat vacated by Matt Gaetz.
- Florida’s 6th Congressional District (April 1, 2025): Help elect Josh Weil, running to replace Republican Michael Waltz.
- New York’s 21st Congressional District (Date TBD): Back Blake Gendebien, running for the anticipated vacancy left by Elise Stefanik.
- Elected Officials Must Take Immediate Action—As our local and state leaders, you have the power and responsibility to safeguard democracy. Here’s how:
- Issue Public Statements – Elected leaders must publicly condemn authoritarian actions at the federal level and reaffirm their commitment to constitutional governance.
- Pass Resolutions Defending Democracy – City councils, county boards, and state legislatures should adopt resolutions rejecting federal overreach and reaffirming democratic principles.
- Advance Legislative Safeguards – State and local representatives must champion policies that protect voting rights, prevent election interference, and ensure local governments are not forced to cooperate with unlawful federal actions.
- Amplify Reliable Information—Share fact-checked updates to combat misinformation that seeks to justify these power grabs.
- Show Up and Make Your Voice Heard—Participate in or organize community actions, demonstrations, and gatherings to stand against authoritarianism. Ensure events follow legal requirements by securing necessary permits and coordinating with local law enforcement. Whether it’s attending a rally, organizing a sign-waving event, or gathering in solidarity, every effort counts.
- Engage in Direct Democratic Party Actions—Sign up for party-led initiatives that strengthen voter participation and civic engagement.
BEYOND IMMEDIATE ACTION
Democratic efforts must happen at all levels of government. Our community must stand together to push back against authoritarianism while also building a long-term vision for a stronger, more representative democracy.
- Push Back Against Political Violence & Intimidation—Speak out when local officials, election workers, or community leaders face threats or harassment. Call on local law enforcement and elected officials to take these threats seriously and publicly condemn intimidation tactics. If you witness voter suppression or intimidation, report it immediately.
- Promote Voter Registration & Turnout—Ensure that every eligible voter is engaged in upcoming elections.
- Support Legislation Protecting Voting Rights—Advocate for policies that defend fair elections and prevent voter suppression.
- Educate Young & First-Time Voters—Help them understand the stakes and the importance of their participation.
- Speak Out Against Political Violence & Intimidation—Reject efforts to normalize threats against officials and activists.
This is not just about resisting authoritarianism—it’s about ensuring our democracy works for all of us. Our elected representatives must create a strategic plan to serve their communities effectively and push back against attacks on democracy. We need a clear, collective strategy that connects local, state, and national efforts. Support Democratic efforts at every level of government, and let’s build a movement that protects our rights, our community, and our future.
In solidarity and resolve,
Dolores Morales, Chair
San Benito County Democratic Party
