CalFire and the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office found remains of what they believe to be an adult female, a toddler, and an infant while it worked on a fire that occured on Panoche Road, according to a press release by the San Benito County Sheriff’s Department.

On June 4 at approximately 10:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office was dispatched to assist on a CalFire incident labeled the Panoche Fire. This was a separate incident from the Airline Fire and the Eastern Fire, two other blazes burning in San Benito County.

According to the press release, firefighters located what appeared to be a deceased adult in what appeared to be the remains of a camping trailer on the property.

Upon arrival, detectives located the remains of what are believed to be an adult female, a toddler, and an infant. Detectives processed the scene and took custody of the decedents around 4:30 a.m on Tuesday, June 5.

Identities of the decedents have not been released and notifications of next-of-kin are being attempted. Identities of the decedents will be released once the office is able to do so, according to the press release.

The Panoche Fire is 64 acres and 75 percent contained, as of noon on June 5, according to the CalFire website.

CalFire is investigating the origin and cause of the fire. It is still an active incident. Please note that the San Benito County Sheriff’s Office has the role of coroner only, and is not investigating the incident.
