The City of Hollister has been receiving concerns about intermittent odors in the vicinity of South Street and Westside Boulevard. These intermittent odors have been identified as originating from the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant located on South Street.
The Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant is leased by San Benito Foods to process its tomato waste and is operated by the Sunnyslope Water District (SWD). SWD is currently removing tomato waste from the plant in preparation for the summer canning season.
However, the tomato waste must be completely dried out before removal, which causes an odor similar to manure. Rains have and may continue to delay the drying process, and SWD expects the process to be completed by April 30th.
SWD is actively treating the tomato waste to help reduce the intermittent odors. The City of Hollister would like to clarify that these intermittent odors are not associated with the Cityās domestic wastewater treatment facility. Should you have more questions regarding the intermittent odors at the Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant, please contact SWD at (831)637-4670.
