Robbery suspect arrested after multi-county chase

The CHP's involvement in the pursuit covered 58 miles.

On Friday, Dec. 29 at approximately 10:27 p.m.  Hollister-Gilroy CHP entered a pursuit with a suspect wanted by Gilroy Police Department (GPD) for armed robbery.

The suspect, Izaak Anthony Diaz allegedly used a handgun in a robbery at a Pizza Hut on the 1100 block of First Street in Gilroy, according to The Mercury News

A CHP report said a Gilroy Police Officer spotted Diaz, who was driving a 2007 Volkswagon Passat, and attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The car then sped away and the CHP took over the pursuit from the Gilroy Police at their request on SR-156 near Hollister, the CHP report said. The chase went through the city of Hollister.

The pursuit traveled through San Benito and Santa Clara Counties. GPD and CHP successfully deployed spike strips, flattening three of the four Volkswagon's tires. Eventually, the CHP used their patrol vehicle to ram into and bring the Volkswagon to a stop on U.S. 101 at the southbound San Martin Avenue off-ramp, continued the report.

With the help of a Morgan Hill Police Department police dog, Diaz was placed under arrest and the Gilroy Police Department took him into custody. The investigation is ongoing.
