Rotary Club of Hollister’s Larry Barr has been selected for Rotary International's Service Above Self Award.  The Award was established in 1991 by the Rotary International board of directors.

The Service Above Self Award is Rotary International’s highest honor for an individual Rotarian who embodies the organization's motto “Service Above Self,” by demonstrating their continuing humanitarian service efforts and involvement in helping others. This is an internationally competitive award, with a maximum of 150 recipients selected worldwide each year. There are more than 1.2 million Rotary members, in more than 34,000 Rotary clubs, in more than 200 countries.

Barr was presented with this honor on April 30 at the Rotary District 5170 Conference in San Ramon. He was nominated and selected based on his dedication to youth service and international service.  He has helped build schools and provide computers in remote and poverty stricken areas of the Philippines, and has made multiple trips back to the Philippines with a personal dedication and mission. Barr has also delivered more than 40,000 toothbrushes, as well as clothing, shoes, and other supplies that we take for granted.

Barr has been a member of Hollister Rotary since January 1997, and is a Paul Harris Fellow+3.  He has long served the youth in our community by serving as the youth services director for the Rotary Club of Hollister, as well as serving as the youth services chair in Rotary’s District 5170, which covers the Bay Area from Oakland south to Hollister. He has been active in promoting and empowering the Interact Club at San Benito High School for many years, which is the high school branch of Rotary, and encouraging Interact-ors to participate in RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) leadership camp.  He brought the International Student Exchange program to SBHS Interact Club members and has given kids a chance to experience other cultures and countries.

Barr’s contributions are many, both near and far, and exemplify the Service Above Self Award. This recognition is very well deserved. Well done Larry!  We are lucky to have such a wonderful individual in our community.
