This spring, the San Benito Cattlewomen had a successful reusable bag giveaway with over 1,500 bags distributed to the residents of San Benito County. The bags were given over three days throughout April and May to customers at local Nob Hill, Safeway, and Lucky supermarkets. Additionally, the Cattlewomen successfully handed out 600 bags at the Hollister Farmer’s Market.
Beef Promotion Director Sally Silva came up with the idea after California passed Senate Bill 270 in 2016 banning large grocery stores from providing single-use plastic bags at carry out.
“I thought it would be a great idea to pass out beef recipes and beef nutritional information to the public while also providing a great reusable bag,” said Silva. “This year not only did we go back to the local grocery stores, we also went the farmer’s market.”
This year’s giveaway resulted in a 50 percent increase for reusable bags and hopefully informed more of the general public on the beef industry. Each bag smartly displayed the “I Love Beef” logo with informative pamphlets inside ranging from how to properly cook California Cut Tri-Tip to the nutritional benefits of beef in one’s diet.
While handing out “I Love Beef” bags at the Hollister Farmer’s Market, San Benito Cattlewomen President Charlotte Cabral said, “It was a wonderful and rewarding sight to see downtown Hollister covered in a sea of red bags. Any exposure or information we can relay to the residents of San Benito County is invaluable.”
When asked if this bag giveaway would be continued yearly, Cabral said, “We will see, but we are thinking that the giveaway is a possibility to continue outreach.”
Silva added, “Right now, we are in works of planning our next big giveaway, which will be at the Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo on June 24th from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in front the museum."
Silva and the San Benito Cattlewomen would like to thank the entire Beef Promotion Committee for all their help and the ladies who attended and assisted in the “I Love Beef” giveaway: Jamii Pura, Emery Pura, Brett Pura, Cindy King, Sandy Williams, Jane Eade, Debbie Loos, Toni Jane Renz, Sally Strohn, Marian Tobias, and Charlotte Cabral.
