San Benito County Free Library To Celebrate National Library Week

A week of events has a theme of "Libraries Transform"

The San Benito County Free Library is inviting county residents to join in celebrating National Library Week, which takes place during the week of April 10-16. The theme for 2016 is “Libraries Transform.”

National Library Week began in 1958 as a celebration of how librarians and libraries of all types have contributed to the social and cultural fabric of American society.  In celebration of National Library Week, the San Benito County Free Library will be holding a series of programs that highlight the contributions of people who have made the library the county hub for literacy and learning that it is today.

Monday, April 11 will be Customer Appreciation Day, during which the library will hold an open house showcasing enhanced services such as their self-checkout machines funded by San Benito County, the Friends of the San Benito County Free Library, and the Community Foundation for San Benito County.  Refreshments will be provided for guests, and a special guest appearance will be made by First 5 San Benito mascot Little Red Readinghood, who will be leading the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Tuesday, April 12 volunteers who tutor with the library’s adult literacy programs will be the focus of the celebration, while Wednesday and Thursday will be all about the kids.

Wednesday, April 13 will feature story times for youngsters as well as the debut of the library’s new Emergent Literacy Lab for children ages 3-6 featuring early literacy stations from Advanced Workstations in Education.

Thursday, April 14 elementary school-age children will enjoy a StarWalk Kids storytelling program as well as arts and puppetry with local artist Louise Roy.

Friday, April 15 the library will crown the week with an Evening of the Stars program in which volunteers will be recognized in a ceremony presided over by Susan Logue, President of the Friends of the San Benito County Free Library, and Nora Conte, county librarian.

All of the National Library Week programs are free and open to the public. For more information, be sure to speak with the friendly staff at the San Benito County Free Library located at 470 5th St. in Hollister, or contact them at (831) 636-4107 or at [email protected]
