On May 4, San Benito High School held a groundbreaking ceremony in honor of the new CTE (Career Technical Education) building that will be built behind the new tennis courts in the southwest portion of the campus.
District trustees, school staff, FFA students and parents gathered at the site of the planned building, which will house auto, wood, metal and agricultural classrooms and will also include modernized features such as high-efficiency lighting. Joe Vela of Aedis Architecs and Brad Fannin of Blach Construction will spearhead the project. Both men have been involved with other recent modernization work on campus, some of which has been financed by a voter-approved bond measure.
Board President Ray Rodriguez thanked the board for taking a chance on the CTE building and said, “This is the most visible thing we have done with Measure G,” a $42.5-million bond approved by voters.
Superintendent John Perales thanked FFA students and parents for their continued support of the school. “We have amazing teachers, students and now a facility, so now nothing will stop us from being the best,” he said.
Principal Adrian Ramirez shared his excitement and said he got the job at the right time, referencing the construction of the new buildings and overall modernization efforts on campus.
He said all of the CTE courses were college prep courses and no longer are those courses “… for kids who wouldn’t make it in college.”
