The San Benito High School Migrant Education Speech and Debate Team has taken second place at the Migrant Education Region One contest in San Jose.
"This exceptional group of students has been working hard since December to prepare for this day and their efforts have been rewarded," wrote San Benito High School social science teacher and team coach Chris Lasley in a staff email.
Formed in January 2017, the team is made up of five students. The girls are all in their junior year while the two boys are seniors. Throughout the year they learn the basic of argumentation and are led through a series of exercises designed to improve their understanding of deductive argument.
"This is the second year San Benito High has participated in the regional tournament in San Jose and the first time they have brought home a trophy. These students are all in rigorous and demanding AP level courses as well as other extra-curriculars so I am very impressed with how they have spent the last three months practicing and researching after a long day of school in order to be ready for the big event this last weekend," Lasley told BenitoLink.
