San Benito High School officials are inviting students, parents, staff and community members to a 5 p.m. groundbreaking ceremony Monday, May 11 for a new physical education facility.
The expansion of Mattson Gym, which has been in the works for 13 years, will house a weight room, wrestling room, team rooms, restrooms and storage areas. It is being funded from the district's general fund, not the facilities bond that was passed by county voters last November.
"I am excited to be able to begin work on these much-needed facilities – our students and staff deserve them," said Superintendent John Perales, who added, "This groundbreaking ceremony also symbolizes other work which will begin this summer."
Those projects include modernization of buildings in the "300's" section of campus, air conditioning on the campus' south side, and other work.
A construction trailer is now on campus and seismic trenching for the new Career Technical Education building has also begun on the south side of campus. "It feels great to see progress on our construction and modernization projects," Perales said.
