San Benito High School faculty, staff and students collected 1,025 pairs of shoes during a recent three-week effort that ended Tuesday to donate footwear that will be sent to needy people in Africa. The effort is an extension of this year's "Make a Difference Monday" effort, in which students do random acts of kindess to make the campus and the community a better place.
The school's Associated Student Body partnered with thinkkindness.org on the shoe collection effort, which began just before Prom with an assembly at Mattson Gym. While the effort fell short of the initial target of 4,500 shoes, organizers are still pleased with the results.
"What a wonderful accomplishment made by our students and staff," said first-year Student Activities Director Catalina Lemos. "I know it wasn't the 4,500 we were asked to gather, but I am still so proud of our school!"
