Boy Scout Troops 777 and 787 have a fundraiser that the entire Hollister community can see. The troops put up American flags on eight holidays throughout the year; Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, September 11, and Veteran’s Day.

This year, they were also asked to display their flags when a veteran was returning from overseas and for the Hollister Airshow, to honor a fallen airman. The goal of the fundraiser is to raise money for two reasons: (1) Help the scouts pay for their annual Super Activity (Scout Camp). (2.) Help pay for equipment – tents, stoves, chairs, canoes, etc. All funds go toward helping the young men – there is no overhead taken out. In 2015, the combined troops will have more than 30 scouts. With Scout Camp costing upwards of $300 per participant, the funds are very needed, organizers say.

There are a total of 74 flags and the troops are asking business and individuals to sponsor a flag. A donation of $100 per flag, per year is what the troops are asking for. They are hoping to find businesses and individuals who are willing to be ongoing sponsors of the flags. So far this year, the troops have secured sponsors for 34 of their flags.

Sponsorship of one flag is the goal. However, there are a number of businesses that have chosen to sponsor more than one flag. This past year, there were three Super Sponsors, who sponsored five flags.

The fundraiser was started more than 25 years ago by John Starkweather, Mike Walters and Jack Kirk, all of whom are businessmen in San Benito County. The troops are working to keep up the tradition of beautifying the community and remembering those who’ve worked so hard to give us the freedoms we have today as a nation.

This article is part of what the scouts promise their business sponsors. They work to recognize them here, in the Free Lance, on the Facebook page and at every one of the Court of Honors.
