Sgt. Burgess, an Army veteran who worked for the Hollister Police Department from January 1985 until he retired as a sergeant in May 2004 on Jan. 6, 2014 was struck by a vehicle while riding his motorcycle in Gilroy and suffered major injuries. On Aug. 11, he succumbed to his injuries and the complications of those injuries.
A gofundme account has been set up by family friends to offset the cost of the medical treatment Sgt. Burgess needed.
Hollister Police Captain Carlos Reynoso said Sgt. Burgess was "an exemplary officer, devoted husband, father and step-father and 'Pappa,' as he was endearingly known. He leaves a void in our extended family at the police department that will not easily be filled any time soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with Andy and his family and friends."
