The San Benito County Free Library’s Adult Literacy Program currently has a waiting list of eager learners who need tutors with whom to partner. The Adult Literacy Program is crucial in San Benito County as it is

estimated more than 19 percent of adults cannot read and write at a level that allows them to navigate everyday tasks for themselves or their children.

No prior teaching experience is necessary to become an Adult Literacy Tutor. The Literacy Program provides training and tutoring materials as well as ongoing support from staff. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and able to commit at least one-and-a-half hours per week for a six-month period. In addition, it is asked that tutors have patience, sensitivity and good English language skills in reading, writing and grammar.

Tutors and adult learners generally meet weekly on a one-on-one basis at the Library for one-hour sessions that are tailored to individual learners’ goals.

Make a positive change in a learner’s life and your community and become a volunteer literacy tutor today. Pick up a volunteer tutor application at the County Library (470 Fifth St., Hollister) or for more information contact Literacy Assistant Rosa Garcia by phone (636-4107, ext. 20) or email (rgarcia@cosb.us) or Literacy Coordinator Betty Mason by email (bmason@cosb.us).
