On Saturday, July 20, 2013, the Class of 1971 Scholarship will hold its annual fundraiser to benefit graduating Haybalers of San Benito High School. The event will take place from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Bolado Park Golf Club in Tres Pinos, California.
The Class of 1971 Scholarship was established in 2007 by Haybaler alumni Rudy Bermudes, Debbie Carrillo Villalon and Debbie Paura Overweser to help seniors pursue their higher education goals, whether they enroll in a college, university, technical school or vocational school.
After attending a Baler Scholarship Presentation Night, Bermudes, president of the Class of 1971 Scholarship, noticed that few awards were given by graduating classes. “The light turned on,” he said, “I wanted to start a scholarship for my class.”
The founders’ goal was to target the average high school senior. Bermudes said, “By the time students have become a senior, they have what it takes to be committed to helping others. They have learned to be team players. They can see themselves furthering their education, but they don’t have the means.”
Since 2009, the Class of 1971 Scholarship has been awarded to nine deserving Haybalers for a grand total of $10,000. This year, the recipient of a $2,000 award was Yesenia Sanchez, who plans to enroll at the California State University, Monterey Bay.
The 2013 Class of of 1971 Scholarship fundraiser will feature a Mexican buffet luncheon, silent auction and raffle, of which the grand prize is a flat screen TV. Everyone is welcome to the event.
Lunch tickets are $25 per person. Seating for the luncheon is limited. To reserve seats, contact Bermudes at rudyb50 @ hotmail dot com. To prepay tickets, write a check to “Class of 1971 Scholarship” and mail it to Debbie Villalon, 6875 Santa Ynez Avenue, Atascadero, CA 93422.
