Community Services & Workforce Development (CSWD) has been awarded $60,000 for fiscal year 2015 to provide residential water financial assistance benefits and water conservation education to drought-impacted, low-income households. It has partnered with local water providers to enhance the effectiveness of outreach and coordinate payment of current, past due and/or disconnected water utility bills with payment assistance ranging from $150 to $500. Eligible households will be asked to self-certify they have been impacted by the drought, such as a job loss or reduced hours.
In 2014, CSWD received a grant via this pilot program in the amount of $60,000, and more than 200 families were served, said CSWD Deputy Director, Enrique Arreola, noting that upcoming workshops will educate the public about the impact of the drought and how community members can make a difference in water conservation.
Arreola stated, “Governor Brown called on all Californians to reduce their water use by 20 percent and prevent water waste. The goal of the workshop is teach the importance of water efficiency and taking positive actions to reduce water use; whether at work, outdoors or in your own home.”
