CASA has done it again! Recently, CASA hosted its’ second annual Cards for a Cause, a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament and BBQ Dinner, to celebrate child advocacy in our county. As CASA enters its sixth year of operation in San Benito County, events like this are crucial to the sustainability of the program.
CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, of San Benito County is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of foster children from our community. Our mission is to train and support community volunteers who advocate for abused and neglected children placed in foster care; upholding the children’s rights while pursuing a safe and permanent home. CASA is the only organization in San Benito County that provides this service.
Exactly what does a volunteer advocate do? CASA advocates are sworn in as officers of the court. They are appointed to work with a child, or in some cases, a sibling group. They dedicate approximately 10-15 hours per month to the child (ren). This includes communicating with their social worker, schools and teachers, therapists, foster parents and families. They spend time with the child and provide new opportunities and experiences for the child to participate in. They follow up on case plans to ensure that the child’s best interest and needs are met. The CASA advocate is someone who is consistent in a foster child’s life, they are a positive role model, and most importantly, they are someone who listens.
CASA is an invaluable asset and essential resource in our community. Proceeds from events like the Cards for a Cause fundraiser provides advocacy, giving the foster children a powerful voice and a brighter future.
