Proponents of the attempt to recall San Benito County District 5 Supervisor Ignacio Velazquez increased their margin to 36 votes after the latest batch of ballot results were released on June 9.

Recall backers led by a 1,291-1,255 vote margin out of 2,546 votes counted so far for that race, according to county elections.

Velazquez took an early lead on Election Night, June 2, but subsequent returns saw the recall proponents erase the lead and steadily build a lead of their own that grew to 28 votes early on June 3.

That lead, however shrunk to nine votes after the June 5 results were released.

There have also been 128 under votes, meaning voters who cast ballots in District 5 did not vote in the recall race.

Two incumbent supervisors along with an incumbent clerk-registrar of voters have won their reelection bids by considerable margins while Auditor-Controller Joe Paul Gonzalez trails challenger Laura Garcilazo by more than 1,900 votes.

According to the elections office, there are still 409 ballots to be processed, including 21 provisional and 381 that were damaged, unreadable or challenged.

For the June 2 primary election, San Benito County voters were faced with electing representatives in six local contests, including the attempted recall, and considering a revision of the local cannabis tax.

For the San Benito County Board of Supervisors District 3 and 4 races, along with three other local offices, the candidate that receives more than 50% of the votes wins outright, otherwise the top two vote-getters advance to the Nov. 6 general election.

For state and congressional races, the top two vote-getters will move on to the general election.

According to the Secretary of State, counties must report the final results to the state by July 3 for them to be certified by July 10.

The following are the updated results.
