Hollister police officers arrested a local man for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, among other charges, after citizens reported a reckless driver on Wednesday, June 13.

On June 13 at 5:09 p.m., several concerned community members reported a reckless white Dodge sedan in the area of Union Road at Cienega Road. According to a police department press release, a caller told the 911 dispatcher the vehicle was swerving, running red lights, and was headed towards Airline Highway. Later, dispatchers received another call from an additional community member who stated the reckless vehicle was in the area of San Benito High School.

Around 5:32 p.m., Sergeant Ray Celano located the vehicle in question near the intersection of San Benito Street at Park Street. Sgt. Celano attempted to make a traffic stop, however the driver of the white Dodge sedan failed to yield and fled the area. Celano chased the vehicle and the pursuit continued for several blocks until the suspect vehicle finally stopped. The driver was detained by Sgt. Celano without further incident.

According to the press release, the driver from Hollister, was eventually arrested for driving under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance (heroin), and evading police in a vehicle. He was transported to the San Benito County Jail and booked for the listed charges.

The Hollister Police Department would like to thank the community members for being vigilant and proactive in reporting the reckless vehicle. The police department is grateful a dangerous driver was taken off the streets with no one injured.
