Dear Fellow Members of the San Benito Community,
As you know, the San Benito County Free Library plays a vital role in our community. For some, it is the only place to access the internet, to search for employment, to continue education. For others, it is a warm and welcoming place to socialize and interact with people. For many, the Library represents a safe environment for families and provides us with valuable bonding opportunities, helping us create memories that last a lifetime and instilling a deep love for libraries in our hearts. For all, libraries are the foundation of a democratic society: libraries are all-inclusive; libraries are protective of your freedom to access information and to do so privately; and libraries serve to bridge socioeconomic, cultural, and educational divides.
Yet, despite all the proven benefits of libraries, and despite their unquestioned value to the community, library services are not mandated by the government. In other words, any time there is a lack of funding, the Library will be at the top of the list to have reduced services or be cut altogether. This will be the reality for our Library year after year, UNLESS the community is willing to fund the Library with dedicated monies that do not go into the General Fund.
As President of the Friends of the San Benito County Free Library, I urge you to show your support for this vital institution and attend a Community Forum on the Future of San Benito County Libraries on October 23rd from 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the San Benito County Free Library, 470 Fifth Street, Hollister.
Thank you sincerely,
Jillian Wilson
