San Benito County held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Union Road Bridge on Mon., March 17, 2025. The bridge is set to open to the public on Wed., March 19.

According to a press release from San Benito County:

“This significant infrastructure project represents a major improvement to the local transportation network, enhancing both safety and mobility for residents and visitors. The project includes:

• Realignment of Union Road to improve traffic flow

• Reconstruction and extension of San Benito Street

• Widening and realignment of Cienega Road for better visibility

• Installation of new traffic signals at key intersections”

Steve Loupe, Public Works Administrator and County Engineer for San Benito County, hosted the event. “This project addresses long-standing traffic concerns in our growing community,” Loupe said. “The improved bridge and road realignments will reduce congestion, enhance safety, and support our area’s continued development.”

The county said that the old bridge will be demolished in the coming weeks. The project cost $48 million, with the federal government contributing $42 million and San Benito County covering the remaining $6 million.
