The community of Gilroy held a candlelight vigil July 29 between the library and city hall. Hundreds of community members turned out to speak and show their support after the Garlic Festival shooting on July 28.

Here are a couple upcoming vigils taking place this week:

Evening of Prayer at New Hope Community Church in Gilroy

Date and Time: Wednesday, July 31 at 7 p.m.

Location: 8886 Muraoka Drive in Gilroy

Vigil in Hollister

Date and Time: Thursday, August 1 at 7 p.m.

Location: 400 block of San Benito Street

Gilroy Garlic Festival Candlelight Vigil

Date and Time: Thursday, August 1 at 7 p.m.

Location: Downtown Gilroy on Monterey Street

The vigil is put on in conjunction with the city of Gilroy, the Gilroy Garlic Festival, the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, Visit Gilroy and the Gilroy Downtown Business Association. The vigil will be an opportunity for the community to come together to support the victims and their families, as well as the attendees and volunteers impacted by the incident.

Family Assistance Center

The Santa Clara County DA’s Office’s Victim Services Unit, American Red Cross and Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services have opened a Family Assistance Center at Rucker Elementary School in Gilroy to assist those affected by the shooting. The school is located at 325 Santa Clara Avenue in Gilroy.

Services provided include:

  • Grief counseling and emotional support
  • Assistance filing claims for state funds for payment of medical bills, counseling bills and other assistance for victims and their families
  • Referrals to agencies and providers for medical, counseling and other services

Free childcare will be provided.

Hours of operation: 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. through this week, with future dates and times to be determined.
