California Highway Patrol (CHP), Hollister-Gilroy Area personnel are investigating three separate crashes that occurred contemporaneously at the State Route 156 at Bixby Road roundabout, in unincorporated San Benito County. The three separate crashes resulted in the deaths of a 48-year-old male (previously reported), and a 32-year-old male, both residents of Hollister.
On February 22, 2026, at approximately 3:42 p.m., the CHP Monterey Communications Center received a report of a motorcycle crash on State Route 156 at Bixby Road. Responding CHP Hollister-Gilroy Area officers arrived on scene and discovered three separate crashes occurred contemporaneously.
As previously reported, preliminary investigation indicated a 48-year-old male crashed his motorcycle within the roundabout, killing himself and causing major injuries to his female passenger. Not previously reported to protect the ongoing investigation, an additional motorcycle and a Lexus also crashed within the roundabout around the same time. The occupants of the Lexus were reportedly not injured.
On February 24, 2026, the CHP learned the rider involved in the other motorcycle crash, a 32-year-old male, succumbed to his injuries and passed away at a local hospital.
The ongoing CHP investigation has yet to rule out any potential causes of the separate crashes, though speed appears to be a consistent factor. Further, it is believed the two motorcyclists and Lexus driver were acquaintances.
āOur thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of the deceased,ā stated Area Commander, Captain Noel Coady. āThis incident reminds each of us to ādrive (or ride) to arrive.ā Adhering to traffic laws and driving/riding defensively can make the difference between reaching our destination safely, or tragedy.ā
