UPDATE: Identity of shooting victim released

Oceanside man's body was found dumped on the side of rural Panoche Road in early August

A man whose body was found on the side of Panoche Road Aug. 6 with multiple gunshots has been identified by the medical examiner as 29-year-old Eleazar Roman Cruz of Oceanside, according to San Benito County Sheriff Capt. Eric Taylor, who said in a statement that "the investigation is ongoing."

Cruz's body was found by a utility subcontractor in the 6800 block of Panoche Road, "just off the shoulder, about 10 feet off the road in plain view in a turnout," Taylor previously told BenitoLink.

Taylor said Cruz appeared to have been shot "multiple times" and "it does not appear that he was killed where he was located. It would seem he was killed somewhere else and placed there."

The area where Cruz's body was found "is just open space," Taylor said, noting that there are some corrals and open structures — and no residences.

Anybody with information about the shooting or the victim is urged to call San Benito County Sheriff’s detectives at 636-4080.
