Eleven-year-old Hollister resident Joshua Rodriguez, who was riding a bicycle, was killed in a collision with a bus Monday afternoon at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Verdun Avenue. Sheriff’s Captain Eric Taylor of the coroner’s office confirmed the victim’s identity to BenitoLink Monday night, saying that a cause of death would be determined following an autopsy “in the coming days.”
At about 4:05 p.m., Hollister Police officers, Hollister Fire Department and AMR responded to the site of the collision and immediately administered CPR to Rodriguez, who was transported by ambulance to Hazel Hawkins Hospital.
Despite prolonged life-saving efforts Rodriguez was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Police say the bus driver was contacted at the scene of the incident. The Hollister Free Lance reported that a county-operated County Express bus was involved in the accident.
“The Hollister Police Department would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends for this tragedy,” said Hollister Police Chief David Westrick in a press release. On Facebook, Westrick added, “Please say a prayer for this child’s family and friends. It’s a horrific tragedy for this family and our community.”
